Feature articles are somewhat different from straight newspaper stories. Although they're both written to deliver news, feature articles tend to deliver more in-depth information. Feature article writers are permitted to explore the stories that they're writing about. They can target specific angles and they can voice out their opinions and ideas without being held liable.
Here's how succeed at feature article writing:
1. Choose your stories wisely. Although you're allowed to write about anything under the sun, its better if you touch on topics that other people will take interest in. Forget about writing science stories or straight news. Instead focus on human interest stories.
2. Plan your content. Nothing beats proper planning in the field of feature article writing. Before you actually tap on your keyboard, decide on what specific angles your going to target and make sure that you stick to it. Determine how you're going to get the information you need and how you can make your articles as interesting, as informative, and as entertaining as much as possible.
3. Be clear about your goals. It's important that you know and fully understand the things that you want to achieve in writing your feature articles. Do you want to evaluate, persuade, influence public opinion, or do you simple want to inform? The clearer your goals are, the higher your chances of achieving them.
4. Start strong. Just like when writing any type of article, you need to make sure that your first couple of sentences are powerful enough to hook your readers in. Ask compelling questions, tell your readers what exactly they can expect from your articles, or challenge their common beliefs. These will surely entice them to read on.
5. Write using active voice. Write the same way you talk. Do you usually use passive voice when you're having conversation with your friends? I don't think so. Active voice will make your feature articles sound stronger and relatively short so use it each time you tap on your keyboard.
6. Stick with facts. Just like when you're writing articles for newspaper, it's very important that you only feed your readers with factual information. Misleading these people by sharing unverified data will instantly ruin your credibility. You don't want that to happen, do you? So, verify all your facts.
7. Always keep your readers in mind. This is one of the most important things that you need to do to succeed in this field. You will need to put your audience on top of you priority list to make sure that you're going to impress them. Before you write, ask these questions to yourself; "What are the things that are most important to my readers?", "How can I make them read my articles?", "What can I do to impress these people?", "How can I make sure that my articles are worth their while?"
8. Avoid using big terms and fancy words. People simply hate it when they come across words or terms that are no longer used in this generation such as those that were used in the bible. So, use only those words that are commonly use by your readers on their everyday conversations. This is to make sure that they'll easily understand your ideas and to make sure that they'll enjoy reading your articles until the end. |
